bullet  General Notes

ROBERT BOYD HAINING was born 14 Dec 1904 in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland, the son of George Balmer Haining and Agnes Scott McGill.  His father was a master shoemaker, but later became a minister for the Seventh Day Adventist Church.  Because of this, "Bert" (as he was known in his younger days) moved at a young age from Kilmarnock, Scotland to Watford, Hertfordshire, England, which was where the headquarters of the Seventh Day Adventist Church was based.  The family also lived in Trinidad for a time, and then came back to Watford, England, and then everyone eventually relocated to the Los Angeles area of California.

Bert went to grade school in Watford, England, and studied at Stanborough College in Hertfordshire, England.  Later he served two years as Dean at Stanborough.  After coming to California, he entered Pacific Union College at Angwin, California followed by the College of Medical Evangelists at Loma Linda where he won his medical doctorate degree. He interned at White Memorial Hospital in Los Angeles and San Diego County Hospital, and from 1932 to 1936 served a residence in medicine at Los Angeles County General Hospital.  In 1932 he was awarded the British degree of L.R.C.P. & S. of Edinburgh.

On 07 Aug 1930, Dr. Haining married Verna Irene Harrower in Pasadena.  Mrs. Haining, a native of Chicago, Illinois, was a daughter of Dr. Henry Robert Harrower, a pioneer Glendale resident and head of The Harrower Laboratories, manufacturers of pharmaceuticals.

Dr. Haining (or "Bob", as he came to be called in America) served as councilor of the Los Angeles County Medical Association for Glendale for many years.  He was an associate of the American College of Physicians; member of the Glendale Rotary Club, Glendale Verdugo Club, Masonic lodges, Al Malaikah Shrine Temple, Glendale Shrine Club and the Glendale Chamber of Commerce.

Bob and Verna had two children, whom they raised in Glendale, Los Angeles County, California.  They also had a small vacation cottage in Pebble Beach, Monterey County, California (inherited from Verna's father), and it was there that Verna died on 11 July 1971.

Bob lived nearly another 14 years after the death of his wife, although he was quite lost without her.  He died of cancer in Seattle, King County, Washington, and was buried next to his wife in Forest Lawn Glendale.

    ROBERT BOYD HAINING, M.D.
    1904 - 1985
    LIVE IN CONTACT WITH FACTS,
    AND YOU WILL INHERIT
    SOMETHING OF THEIR BRUTALITY;
    LIVE IN CONTACT WITH DREAMS,
    AND YOU WILL INHERIT
    SOMETHING OF THEIR CHARM.
    I WISH I COULD FIND A COUNTRY
    WHERE THE FACTS WERE NOT SO BRUTAL
    AND THE DREAMS NOT SO UNREAL.
